The Academic Council was established in 1960 to coordinate academic policies among the colleges of the Drexel Institute. President James Creese suggested the establishment of what he called a "Council of Deans," chaired by the dean of the faculty. The group's name was changed to "Academic Council" later that year to better reflect its membership, as many of the institute's non-academic deans did not regularly meet with the council.
